Cyberdyne’s photoacoustic imaging: advancing medical diagnostics from Rotterdam |
|

|
|
Best known for pioneering wearable robotics, Japanese tech company Cyberdyne is now breaking new ground in medical technology. Its Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) system – a medically approved exoskeleton controlled by bioelectrical signals – has already transformed rehabilitation care. Now, from its office in Rotterdam, Cyberdyne is developing a photoacoustic imaging system that uses light and sound to visualize what is happening inside the body, revolutionizing diagnostics. We spoke with Dr. Mithun Kuniyil Ajith Singh, who leads this work in Rotterdam, about Cyberdyne’s new focus and its close collaboration with Erasmus MC. |

CIC Rotterdam launches new innovation space ‘DELTA’ |

On Friday, June 20, CIC Rotterdam celebrated the official opening of its newest community space, DELTA – a 1,136 m² expansion within the Groot Handelsgebouw that marks a significant step in strengthening the city’s innovation ecosystem. The festive opening event welcomed Alderman Robert Simons, CIC Founder & CEO Tim Rowe, and General Manager Joyce Kornet-Vreugdenhil to cut the ribbon on this dynamic addition to CIC’s innovation campus. |

AI helps doctors and lab technicians assess echocardiograms |
Erasmus MC is the first academic center in the Netherlands to use AI software for echocardiography. This technology allows heart ultrasounds to be analyzed automatically while the patient is still on the treatment table. This smart technology helps clinicians assess heart ultrasounds more quickly, accurately, and consistently, reducing workload and improving the quality of patient care. |

Erasmus MC spin-off Matriarch participates in Venture Challenge Spring 2025 |
Five teams have started the Venture Challenge Spring 2025, including one spin-off from Erasmus MC and its Technology Transfer Office: Matriarch. Matriarch is an early-stage venture developing a cost-effective, animal-friendly, and eco-friendly alternative hydrogel matrix for growing organoids - 3D stem cell cultures used in biomedical research. |

Sanne de Vries new chair of Medical Delta |
Dr. Sanne de Vries will succeed Prof. Dr. Frank Willem Jansen as of August 1 as chair of Medical Delta. Together with Drs. David de Glint, she will form the board of the health and innovation consortium of Zuid-Holland’s universities and universities of applied sciences. |

On Thursday, June 2, Rotterdam Square brought together key players from the MedTech ecosystem for the event ‘Bridging the Gap – From Innovation to Implementation in MedTech’, hosted at Erasmus MC. The afternoon focused on one of the most pressing challenges in MedTech today: how to successfully translate innovative technologies into clinical practice. |
